A scorching hot summer wedding day at gosfield hall for L&D

Updated: Mar 4

On the hottest summer’s day of the year, I had the joy of photographing L&D’s wedding at the truly stunning Gosfield Hall, a Grade I-listed former Royal Palace!... set in over 10 acres of landscaped gardens, parkland and a mile-long lake in beautiful Essex countryside.

I began the day wandering the immaculate grounds, capturing colourful blooms, lush greenery and even lifting the drone high above to photograph Gosfield Hall’s photographing the breathtaking exterior from a different aspect.

With manicured lawns, ornate fountains and rich floral colour everywhere, the setting is a photographer’s dream.

Both the bride and groom rooms were generously spacious, filled with natural light from their high ceilings and large windows. The extra room made it easy to work around chairs, jackets, makeup and all the typical things you'll see as both bridal party and groomsmen get ready. Something I always strive to avoid so that every image feels clean, calm and beautiful.

Emotional Moments and Elegant Architecture of Gosfield Hall

Before joining the groom in the ceremony room, I had the honour of capturing a heartfelt first look between the bride and her father. Gosfield Hall’s elegant interiors, rich with detail and character helped framed their embrace beautifully!

Inside, the excitement grew as guests took their seats. The bride made her entrance with poise and joy, stepping into a ceremony filled with warmth and expectation. After their vows, the energy continued for the indoor confetti toss... a lively celebration that burst with colour and excitement.

Portraits in Perfect Light

As the heat of the day soared, we took advantage of a shaded area nearby for group shots. The even lighting and relaxed atmosphere meant no one was squinting, and everything felt natural and joyful.

For the couple portraits, L&D chose to enjoy a peaceful walk around the grounds. With a lovely circular route that offered dappled shade, full sun and soft shadow in equal measure, it gave such a lovely variety for portraits and every corner of the estate makes for a gorgeous backdrop. We finished up with taking photos inside, some with flash to add even more variety.

A Celebration Across Magnificent Spaces

During the reception, I took advantage of Gosfield Hall’s dynamic interior spaces. With multiple rooms from the historic ceremony spaces to the grand reception room, there’s so much architectural beauty to explore. The ballroom, with its crystal chandeliers and elegant decor, made a stunning setting for dinner and speeches.

I even slipped in a few extra couple shots before guests entered the wedding breakfast, an opportunity that always adds more depth and variety to the final album.

As the day unfolded, there was more to capture: guests mingling on the lawns, playing the garden games available, joyful moments with family and friends. With the sun setting, the building looked even more impressive, so I took some more drone shots.

The cake cutting and first dance took place across different parts of this expansive venue... something I always love about Gosfield Hall’s fabulous layout. From bride prep to first dance, every part of the day felt unique as they're each taking place in a new room.

Gosfield Hall isn’t just a venue... it’s a historic, elegant setting that gives every wedding its own storybook feel. With 10 acres of gardens, a rich architectural heritage dating back to Tudor and Georgian times, and rooms full of character and light, it’s a location that truly elevates every moment.

THE FINAL WORD FROM THE HAPPY COUPLE

''We first met James on a video call having already browsed through his photo galleries and liked his work. He was laid back & easy to get on with.

Meeting James on the day was exciting, knowing our whole day would be captured. The photos were great, and even captured a lot of natural candid ones which we wanted. Will be making an album & canvas of these perfectly captured pics. Would recommend James for any special day.''
