Some weddings are great. Some are emotional. And then there are those rare days that feel cinematic... full of joy, laughter, tender moments, and that unmistakable feeling that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be. L&M’s wedding at The Mitre Hotel, Hampton Court was absolutely one of those days, and I felt incredibly privileged to be there capturing every second.
Set on the banks of the River Thames, right opposite the historic Hampton Court Palace, The Mitre is a boutique riverside hotel with charm to spare. Its characterful interiors and boutique sensibility offered a warm, elegant backdrop for a day that effortlessly balanced intimate moments with lively celebration.
Getting Ready: Calm, Light and Full of Anticipation
The day began in the bridal suite, a beautifully proportioned space split into two rooms that let in lots natural light. On some occasions there was seven of us in the there at once, still, there was ample space for laughter, reflection, and those exciting 'first looks' without ever feeling crowded.
Downstairs, the groom’s prep unfolded in similarly lovely surroundings. We made the most of the bar and then the library, a room that was a dream for photography thanks to its (again) brilliant natural light and clean, classic backdrop. It set the tone perfectly for how the day would unfold: relaxed, elegant, and full of expression. Often these old characterful buildings lack the natural light, which can be troublesome for photos, but not a problem at The Mitre.
A Ceremony at The Mitre Hotel is Full of Light
For me, the ceremony space at The Mitre was an absolute favourite. Light filled every corner of the room, showcasing the stunning floral arrangements and allowing me to move freely for unobstructed shots of both the couple and their guests. Space and natural illumination make a photographer’s heart very happy!
Once vows were exchanged, the terrace, which has with views stretching gently over the Thames.
This became the ideal setting for group portraits. Whether framed with the flower arch or catching the soft glow of riverside ambience, each moment felt like a postcard.
Portraits, a Boat Ride, and Pure Joy
We kicked off couple portraits with my drone, making the most of the Thames, then hopped aboard a boat for a trip downriver toward Kingston. It was a peaceful interlude for the newlyweds and a moment of peace just for them, before the party began.
Upon our return, the confetti flew (and covered South West London in it!), rosé wine poured freely, and the atmosphere buzzed with energy. Canapés and wine on the terrace set everyone in just the right mood before the speeches. And let me say: there were laughs aplenty and heartfelt moments, it was the perfect blend.
Dancing, Decor, and Sunset Moments
After the cake cut, full of the same vibrant colour and joyful spirit as the floral décor (all of which was lovingly DIY’d by the bride, what an incredible job!), came the first dance. As expected, the guests joined in at the chorus and the dance floor filled. The vibe? Infectious.
Before I headed home, I whisked the newlyweds away for just ten minutes to capture them on the nearby bridge as the sun set behind them... a gentle, golden close to an incredible day (and right in line with my philosophy of short, meaningful portrait sessions). They slipped back into the party with smiles, breathless and happy, just as a wedding should leave you!
Why The Mitre Works So Beautifully for Weddings
What makes The Mitre truly special: beyond its stunning location and architectural charm, it blends historic riverside atmosphere with warm, welcoming service.
Licensed for weddings and celebrations of all sizes, the venue’s range of spaces, from intimate interiors to terrace views over the Thames - this means every couple can shape the day that feels right for them.
Whether you’re imagining a smaller celebration or exclusive use of the whole hotel, this is a venue that invites elegance without formality and sets the stage for moments that linger long after the last dance.
